Montagnac, the Provençal soil and truffle farming

Montagnac-Montpezat is a small village typically Provencal and enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine a year. In the heart of the preserved nature of the Verdon, and the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, you will make many discoveries in the surroundings and the most gastronomic of these will be the truffle of course!

The village is always very quiet, except during the famous truffle market which is held every year in January. It is the major event of Montagnac-Montpezat and that’s what made it famous. Some people only know the village as “Montagnac-les-Truffes”.

The Montagnac truffle market is one of the biggest and most important in the whole region. Don’t miss the black truffle celebration on the third Sunday in January! The mass that takes place in the morning is accompanied for the occasion by fife and tambourines. After the service, the statue of Saint Anthony is carried in procession through the streets of the village. He is the patron saint of truffle growers.

While visiting the church of Montagnac, you will be able to visit the statue of Saint-Antoine le Grand, which is represented with his sow. Who knows, maybe you too will have the opportunity to find some truffles during your escapades in the Verdon?

Provençal music and dances then invade the town for a colorful traditional festival! Then, on the village square, you can attend the blessing of the truffle dogs. And finally, the festivities come to an end! Usually, a feast is organized on the square, where you can taste the black diamond accompanied by traditional dishes and local specialties.
